Procrastination is one of those things that everyone does now and again. For me, it’s an obvious outcome of a mind that is motivated by pleasure and pain; occasionally your mind is going to do whatever it can to avoid that pain (or perceived pain at least) because, to be quite frank, it can think of better things to do. Does that make sense? You think about doing that job that needs done, you can’t be bothered because its boring/painful/hard/long/dirty (delete as applicable) your mind gives you a picture of something much more interesting like doing nothing or eating chocolate. Simple choice from there on in. Pleasure wins.

It’s a simple game of comparison. Chocolate trumps cleaning the toilet… possibly a bad example but go with me.

So why then do we procrastinate on our own happiness? Why do we say things like ‘I’ll be happy when… ‘ or ‘I’m going to wait until I have a new job before I lose weight/leave the bad relationship/get the good relationship’ or whatever it is you say that delays the onset of the life you want. This type of behaviour suggests that we perceive some sort of pain with being happy, does it not? Otherwise, why would we wait? Surely if it was only pleasure involved we’d do it straight away? Like right now!?

I think about this a lot. I think the pain we associate with happiness is our fear that happiness is fragile, a delicate, precious thing that is easily cracked, smashed or stolen especially by other people. We think our lives have to be perfect because its only then we can be strong enough to hold on to it. We think we have to be bulletproof to allow ourselves to show our happiness to the world. But that’s not true, you’ve got it the wrong way round. You have to show your happiness to the world in order to become bulletproof.

Happiness, whatever that is for you, is waiting for you right now. It lives within you, it is patient, it is strong and, in some ways, it is quiet (its rare to find someone who is truly happy screaming about it every second of every day). You can have it now if you choose to, I promise. The biggest thing that stops you is more than likely some bullsh!t rule that says you shouldn’t because. So, why not decide to be happy right now while you lose weight? Why not decide to be happy right now and use that as fuel to leave your crappy relationship? Why not decide to be happy right now just because you ruddy well can?

Can you now recognize what is going on here and that the only outcome is emotional turmoil?

It’s a lose-lose situation because in selectively replaying bad events from the past, you damn yourself if you do and you damn yourself if you don’t.

Amazingly, a lot of sufferers are able to rake over past misfortunes from way back in their lives, even going back fifteen, twenty or thirty odd years to castigate themselves for actions they did or did not perform.

Just a few weeks ago, I realized that I was raking over a number of bad experiences that happened to me about a decade ago and I created a new technique to address it that I’m sure will be of great help with stress and stressful illnesses.

At the point of realizing how I was repeatedly replaying past circumstances and that it was making me really sad, I turned to look at my face in the mirror and firmly stated:

“This cannot continue. What occurred back then is spilt milk, gone once and for all and I won’t let it hurt me again from this moment on.”

That’s a powerful statement to make as well as being completely true, but what I said next is the most important part:

“What a total bore-fest this is. I am tired of this nonsense, it has gone on long enough and it isn’t going to bore me to tears anymore. It’s now time to move on to a brand new exciting chapter.”

Healing My High Blood Pressure – Ancestry of Immigrants

I’m in the depths of studying Meta Medicine at the moment and part of that study is looking at psychogenealogy, which is treating the transmissions of unconscious issues across generations in the family.

I’ve been told that my blood pressure issues are genetic, and so can’t be sorted fully via diet and exercise etc, so I have to just accept I have this genetic condition. My father being diagnosed with it at age 40. As I’m 51 the doctor told me that women are often 10 years older when diagnosed than the men in their families.

I felt quite unsettled at the thought that I was going to have to take this medication for the rest of my life, as it doesn’t make me feel great.

I asked myself if this is genetically handed down to me from my father’s side of the family, then where on his side of the family tree do I feel drawn to? I noticed his father, who had died when I was a toddler, and his mother had passed away before I was born. I realised that my grandfather’s father had also died young in a fire, and his mother died young too.

I took this dynamic to Heike McCahon who does family constellations work, and we set up a scenario using little figurines as representatives of my lineage of fathers.

I was first drawn to my great grandfather who died in a house fire, I felt I was carrying some part of his experience in me. It literally felt as if my blood was boiling, realising that I like my father and probably his father before him, were quick to temper.

Then I could feel the long line up of abandonment of sons through death and family discord.

Heike introduced my great great grandparents. I intuitively felt that they were anchorless and felt lost. At that time I couldn’t remember if they were the generation who had settled in New Zealand and were immigrants.

She brought in representatives of my ancestors from Great Britain, and for the land and rivers. I felt this strength and solidness embody me. I was reconnected again and had arrived home. My ancestors were welcoming me and my father and grandfathers back home.

The first part of the session I felt as if the heat was rising to the top of my body, the second part of my session I was way more grounded and in the lower part of my body.

When I came home I looked up my family tree and found that my fathers came from Walthamstow in Essex, England. The meaning of Walthamstow is *A Place of Welcome*.

This was my blood line.
